This is a great question. The teen years tend to be filled with storm and strife because it is a period of rapid change. Thinking is becoming more adult-like but there are frustrations with the difficulties of seeing from other perspectives, looking long term rather than just immediate drives, and conceiving of abstract concepts.
Part of the frustration is going from family and parent oriented to peer group oriented. Teens are trying out new behaviors, different ways of expressing their individuality (often quite obnoxious).
Teens have it hard because they are adult like in their size and thinking but not so much with their freedoms and rights. Teens play an important role in our society for questioning authority and abuses of authority, challenging rules and laws that don't make sense, and exposing hypocrisy of the older generation. All these roles have a negative connotation. It's a tough job, but that is what our society has developed.
Was this confusing enough?

It's just teen angst…hormones and all that. Teens feel as though they have so many problems and that no one understands them. In reality, they have no concept of the fact that everyone goes through the same thing during these years.
