Why does it seem like the more sex education teens get the higher the teen pregnancy rates get?

Posted at January 21st, 2009 by admin

Back in the 1950's when there was no sex ed, no clinics, no birth control and abortion was illegal teen pregnancy rates were very low.

Now here in permissive 2009 – we have all of the above and the UK has the highest teen pregnancy rate in Europe.

yeah, good point i never thought of, maybe parents should teach thier children/teens. but also there is so much stuff on sex on the internet and i think most young boys learn about sex from porn, so theres not much you can do to stop this

correction back in the 1950s daughter dearest would go to the country to stay with realatives whilst mummy would stuff her shirt an than BAM!! daughter pops a kid an mummy ends up with a kid OR quick an easy hush hush adoptions.

The time may change but the people don't.

Different Society in 1950s. Back then if you got pregnant you got stuck with a kid. Now you can get rid of them + think of how many people in 1950s would actually admit their kid got pregnant? Shotgun marriage?

I think it's because parents have become too used to saying 'yes' to their kids.

so when their daughter comes home knocked up at 13 and demands that they help raise her brat, they say "Yes, of course we'll help you!"

In the 50's they would have done what I would do.
Point at the door and say "Get out"

Perhaps you should look at the teen pregnancy stats in Scandinavian countries where they teach sex ed from a young age – as young as 6. Their rates are the lowest in Europe.
It's not the sex ed that's the problem, it's the attitude surrounding sex ed.

Cause its true! Now teens are under the impression as long as you use a condom and on birth control everything is going to be fine and dandy… Or! During all that talk about sex during sex ed made them even more curious.

    Hope i helped!

The high rates of teenage pregnancy is nothing to do with sex education. Denmark has far better sex education awareness but very low preganacy rates.

The cause has probably more to do with alcohol and social life style of young people.

The fact that I'm a teenage mother has nothing to do with sex education. It's a person's choice. And it's more socially accepted now… I guess. =]

Completely untrue, in places with better sex education they have found lower teen pregnancy rates etc.

In the 1950s it was often hidden, statistics would be more unreliable. Pregnant teens were sent away to live with relatives, babies were passed off as siblings, there were illegal abortions (and legal abortions for richer people if they threatened suicide).

Anyway, they have sex education, clinics, birth control and abortions in the other European countries, and usually more of it…so what's your point of comparing the UK to them?

Back in the 1950's people were married between 16 and 18 years of age. Coincidence? I am sure some of them were pregnant, I am betting the ones closer to 16! When my grandmother married my grandfather, she didn't need her parents to sign anything because she could get married at 16, he was 1 month before he turned 18 and he needed his parents consent, my grandmother wasn't pregnant, he was going to war so they rushed it, but women were legally allowed to marry younger than men, probably creating less problem when they did get pregnant young.

In the 1950's they had very nice nursing homes and convents for young mothers to be. Don't be fooled that it didn't happen.
The reason teenage pregnancy is on the rise is that girls are using it as a lifestyle choice instead of choosing a career.

Wasn't it if you got pregnant in the 1950's you got sent to a "special school" for nine months?

Sex education can only help the ones who [don't know] about sex. Almost 70% of teens know about sex already.

After they [know] about sex, it's their choice.

I think its cause kids are so desperate to fit in and feel important, they see that kids will bring attention. They just don't realize the really issues with it. I wish parents would keep a better eye on their kids, and their kids would have some kind of common sense.

LOTS of shotgun marriages in the 50's . You got pregnant you got married. About one third of senior girls 'had to' to get married.

Of course there was a thing called 'going steady' where a couple exclusively dated for more than a year and early marriage was expected. There wasn't the 'hooking ups' or casual sex we see today. A relationship mean something. It wasn't just having sex for the thrill of it.

because they are not given the right info, many people thin well if we don't give them all the info they won't do it when that is clearly wrong. they have to know more then use a condom to be safe.

    no no no no

I don't think that sex awareness is the cause of it, i mean the first section in the dictionary little kids go to is 'S'
So its not as if they don't know how to do it
I think it is just the fact that teens tend to drink more nowadays and dont respect themselves as much

Not all teens are like that, but you never hear about the good teens, which is a shame

People today have the option, back then you didn't. People are more careless nowadays because they think "Oh, I can just get rid of it, no big deal" when back then you were forced to keep it and people didn't want to be stuck with that responsibility.

In 1950 and the Centuries before that millions of abortions were illegally performed in secrecy, and nobody got to know of most of those cases, I say that Sexual Education is a very basic thing that all teens should study, but they should wait till they are of legal age to have sex, that's why there's a legal Age of Consent in the first place.

Keeping the kids in the dark wont stop them from having sex, not in these days with no more taboos in the minds of the children, well, not even in the days of the taboos, did the taboos stop the kids from having sex.

Yeah I think possibly the answer is to have sex ed earlier so they just get used to being talked to about it like in sweden etc where they teach it at age eight and there practically no teen pregnancies etc
