Has anyone proven abstinence-only education to reduce the amount of teen pregnancies or abortions?

Posted at January 22nd, 2009 by admin

I'm sorry, my last question was worded incorrectly. People thought it only applied to their current situation.

Does abstinence only education actually reduce teen sex, or just increase unwanted pregnancies by not teaching about birth control?

PLEASE show facts to back up your wild theories. Of course, there ARE exceptions to every rule, so just because "it works for me" doesn;'t mean ANYTHING if it doesn't work for anyone else.

Actually, it increases them.

Yes. I was raised abstinence only and have had sex with no one but my wife.

It is 100% guarenteed if you don't have sex you won't become pregnant.

Oh, I was an assistant principal at a Christian school for a couple of years and we had 0 pregnancies. Compare that to a public school.

But it was a Pentecostal school We actually believe the Bible and don't call Paul a corrupter of Christianity.

Anyone who is a Christian has to be in favor of abstinence-only education. Anyone who is not need not lie to themselves ar anyone else.

    Studies show the exact opposite.

The sad part is: The Bush administration funded a large research on this, and that research showed how abstinence-only sex ed doesn't work.

As a response to that research, Bush increased the funds for abstinence-only sex ed.

seeing that teen pregnancy and abortions occur at higher rates in the bible belt states, would tend to show "abstinence-only" isnt working

All the statistics suggest otherwise. In schools where abstinence-only "sex" education is taught, the number of teen pregnancies is on the rise. In schools where sex education is taught including information about all forms of birth control, there has often been a leveling in the number of teen pregnancies and sometimes even a decrease. I learned this two decades ago when I was studying sociology. But I no longer have my notes from the classes. It was for this reason that I allowed my children to enter classes where sex education was taught. It was for this reason that I supported sex education being taught in schools. It is for this reason that I include such education in classes that I teach as well.

No in fact the vast majority of studies say it no effect or even a negative effect for denying them information.

Abstinence only sex education doesn't work. There are some cites already on here though so no point of me looking them up.

    *edit*
Wow people, yes abstinence does prevent things, but abstinence only education does not prevent teens from having sex. So your point is null and void.

I offer my home state (Mississippi) as an example of abstinence-only education NOT working.

We are a very religious people down here and we have pro-life clinics all over the place. Sex ed is not always taught in school and, if it is, it's watered down. Parents and churches tell their kids not to have sex but it falls on very deaf ears. Then the parents scratch their heads and say, "But I raised them right!" when they find out their daughters are pregnant or have some disease.

We are leading the nation in teen pregnancy and, I think, STDs as well. It's obvious to me that the abstinence-only message is ineffective and dangerous.

    Abstinence definitely prevents pregnancy 100%.
That in turn reduces the number of abortions required.

Teaching teenagers about abstinence-only is really a naive thing to do.
The main fact is that teaching them about abstinence-only does not reduce the amount of teen pregnancies.
Teenagers need to not only learn solely about abstinence but they also need to learn about safe sex practices like using condoms, birth control pills, etc.
And if they just so happen to get pregnant they need to know what their options are: weather they keep the baby, have an abortion, or give it up for adoption.
They need to know these things for life. And not teaching them about life is basically like leaving them uneducated and blind in the world. After all knowledge is power, right?

Here’s some information on how abstinence doesn’t work:
