Do you think sex-education has reduced teen pregenancies?

Posted at October 5th, 2008 by admin

I have seen claims that teaching abstinence has not worked. Is there data available to show that sex education works?

What are some other methods that might work? Separate schools for boys and girls (specially high school)? This is the norm in many countries and it works well.

Increasing school work so that they don't have enough time to spend with the opposite sex? Promote single-sex groups like boy scouts? Mandatory military training to increase discipline?

no i don't think separating boys and girls in school will help. they will find find away outside of school easily.

I think sex ed is the best thing you can do, because teens are going to have sex, wether you like or not, so it's better that they are informed about protection and the diseases and infections you can get as a result.

I'm a teen and I've already had sex, even after the fact of sitting through hours of sex ED class. I really don't know why, but i have. The good thing is though, that I'm much more cautious and i make sure the guy always has a condom.

ALSO i think its VERY important for parents to talk to their kids about sex, and make it a comfortable topic so they will come to you if they have any questions or problems.
i think i would have waited if i talked to my mom about sex, but we don't , and now i have so many questions but i defiantly not ready to give her the news, that I've had sex with two guys , when she assumes I'm a virgin.

Sex education is the best way to go. You're not going to be able to control horny teenagers so the best thing to do is teach them to wear a condom and take the pill.

separation is defiantly the best way. Sex education has just made it worse and honestly when I have children they will not get there sexual education from the government.

Have you looked at some of the questions in the Pregnancy section of this board? These children (and I do mean CHILDREN) have no idea what causes babies! They have no idea what to do to prevent conception, how birth control pills work, why a condom is important, or anything else. It's pathetic, in every very real sense of that word. Clearly abstinence does NOT work – it's time we REALLY started teaching kids to protect themselves, because they're NOT going to abstain; sex is a drive and a need, NOT a matter of discipline, and the thought that you'll discipline it out of them is just plain laughable.

As far as keeping them too busy for sex – is there a guy in the WORLD who is REALLY too busy for sex? Knowledge is power, and these kids are POWERLESS.

Since we live in a free society (or so they say) sex is an option for everyone. Who you do it with or what you do with it is up to you. That is why sex education exists, simply because it is education to try to prevent pregnancy, and diseases, by promoting abstinence. However no matter what you do your still going to have pregnant teenagers. It is just a fact of society. You can't make everyone be or act a certain way, even if you threaten or put them in prison, people are going to be how people are.

No, it is much better to go back to the 1950's when kids learned their sex in the back seat of a Straight Eight Ford, or in the lumber yard at night or even under the house.
Back then we knew how to suppress our selve from a young age and we also learned young to not trust adults or be tricked into counseling.
All this talk about sex-education is just fade, it will blow over.
