Personally I think that very few teenage pregnancies are the result of insufficient or inadequate sex education (and I come from an area where the level of teenage pregnancy is very high!)

I've noticed that 2 main problems are nearly always present in areas with high rates of teen pregnancy - lack of provision for teenagers, and lack of expectation. In so many places there's very little for teenagers to actually do in their spare time - it's fine for those with wealthy parents who can take part in expensive extra curricular activities every day of the week, but for those who aren't in that situation, there is often very little for them to actually do. That's a large part of the reason why teenagers get involved in gangs, in underage drinking, in drugs, and in sex - what else is there for them to fill their time up with?!

On the other hand, when teenage girls aren't very good academically and don't necessarily have very good relationships at home or at school, getting pregnant seems almost like a good option. They can get a house, they can get benefits, they'll have something to love them unconditionally... having a child gives them something to live for and a future to hope for, something that no one else has ever given them. If a girl feels that getting pregnant and having a child is the best that she can offer the world, of course she's more likely to get pregnant.

I'm not saying that I think benefits should be withdrawn from teenagers who have children, or anything of the sort. I just think that instead of focussing continually on sex education (which most teenagers already know inside out), schools should focus on improving teenagers' self-esteem. If they believe that they are capable of more than just becoming a parent, if they actually have a life that they want to move towards achieving, then they are far less likely to have unprotected sex. Likewise, if girls have more of a sense of their own worth, they are less likely to agree to having unprotected sex with the first boy who comes along in order to make them feel as though they are worth something.

Hope this helps.

Yes.
Our school only teaches abstinence and ignore any questions about birth control or condoms. They even told us you could get AIDS from making out. WTF?
References :
Freshman :D

NO

we had sex shoved in our faces when i was in highschool
we had an hour of sex ed each week and teen pregnancy was what its like everywhere

if anything all the sex ed does is increase the amount of people having sex
telling teens all about safe sex etc and then telling them 'but you shouldnt be doing this yet' is stupid
you dont tell teens about bills and how to get a good loan because those are not things you deal with as a teen
so why tell them about sex?
References :
It really depends on the teen we are talking about. Some teens don't have an adequate sex education, and they will get pregnant, but some who don't even have a good sex education will not even think about having sex.
The same with those who have had proper sex education. Some will get pregnant, and some won't.
I think that pregnancy should be more involved in sex education. They say "Yeah if you don't use a condom, you'll get pregnant" and that's it. Prevent pregnancy. I think they should basically try scaring them away from being so careless with their sex life.
I know EXACTLY what most teenagers that end up pregnant are thinking "Oh, I won't get pregnant. Why me out of everyone?"
They should inform them on the struggles of teenage parents.
The last time I had any type of sex education was in 10th grade and that was a chapter in a book in health class we spent ONE day on.
I do think it should be more addressed.
Most of it is immaturity. I will admit that I was immature. When I got pregnant at 16, I thought 'what are the chances of ME getting pregnant?' I can assure you that if I was informed how hard it would be as a teen mom, and a lot of statistics on teen pregnancy I probably wouldn't have been so careless.

many times yes... read the pregnancy section on answers and you will see for yourself. I can't count how many times I read questions about the pullout method!!!!
However I think an open relationship with both parents is also preventative. Statistics show that girls with a relationship with thier father are less likely to get involved with teen sex and drugs.
References :
I don't think it's anything to with lack of sex education. I'm 18 and pregnant, i'm actually very well educated on sex, pregnancy, sti's and how the body works. It was also nothing to do with my parents or the people i was hanging around with. I chose to have sex knowing the consequences.

I have to agree with the answerer below me, alot of people do come on here and ask questions about the pull out method and so on, that i think is just down to stupidity. My 11 year old brother has just started sex education in school and he knows that having sex at anytime in the month can result in pregnancy, even using the pull out method. I have to disagree with the statistic she said though, i have a very close bond with my father, closer than the bond i have with my mother and i still had sex, i didn't do drugs though lol.
References :
Teen pregnancy isn't a new thing. Schools have tried all different forms of sex education over the years, nothing seems to help. The bottom line is kids just don't care, they believe the "It can't happen to me" nonsense.

Teen pregnancy isn't going up, either. Back in the day (as little as 10 years ago) it was shameful to be pregnant so young so the young girls either secretly had an abortion or went to stay with a sick aunt for 9 months, signed adoption papers and moved back home, etc. It wasn't normal for a pregnant teen to be in a normal high school.
