Newborn: Mobiles & Infant Toys?

Posted at September 26th, 2008 by admin

I registered for a mobile but didn't receive one from my shower. Im due on the 4th and am curious if a mobile and infant toys are really necessary.

I am on a very tight budget after the holidays and would like to keep the money I have set aside for emergencies. I received playards, a swing & bouncer but have no actual baby toys. Lots of books but no toys.

Do I need to go out and buy a mobile & some toys, or will he be fine without them?

You can get mobiles very inexpensive. I find that my daughter likes her in her swing and basinette, but didn't notice it till she was about 4 weeks old.

Did you register for these things and/or get receipts for them? If so most placs will allow you to return things you don't want for things you do. If you registered you may not even need the receipt since there is record that this item was purchased at the store for you.

You won't need them right away, but in about 3 months, your baby will need that stimulation. I have a TON of toys I don't need and was going to give away or post on Craigs List. If you want, I can send you some of my sons toys that he barely played with?! I'm in NJ, but I'll send them to you via US Mail anywhere in the US. Let me know if you are interested. I think you can message through Y!Answers, right??

Your baby will only be able to see fuzzy shapes at first, progressively getting better eyesight as he gets older.

I wouldn't even worry about it until he is a month old. Then buy him a couple small toys.
When he can grasp something in his hand, then buy him a rattle and such.

My bouncer seat came with a bar of toys on it, does yours? They usually come off.

My daughter's bassinet has a mobile on it. I kept trying to turn it on every few days for the first month or so of life, and she was uninterested. Then one day, I turned it on and she LOVED it… was just starstruck for 10 minutes straight. That was around 7 weeks. Its a very basic mobile that just has winnie the pooh toys hanging from it. Now, at 10 weeks, she still gets so fascinated by it that I've bought her a more complex developmental mobile.

So, I think you should be fine to delay getting it. My daughter is just now starting to get interested in toys at 10 weeks. Every day, she slowly enjoys "play" a bit more and more. We had got her a bouncy seat that has a waterfall musical attachment on front. She HATED watching the waterfall and seeing the monkies dance until about 2 weeks ago… Now she coos and talks to it.

I agree with the first post…try to find some cheap, gently used mobiles or toys. My son's mobile was a hassle (it came with his bassinet and then we ended up co-sleeping anyways). My husband and I simply strung stretchy elastic ribbon from one end of our room to the other and hung some little plush toys from it right above our bed. He started enjoying seeing them bounce at about 3 months and would reach up and grab them himself to make them jump up and down.

Now, at 7 months, he's not interested and prefers to chew on everything in sight. Oh, and he loves putting his blankie over his face and playing peek a boo.

You souldn't need anything like that for a month or two. I too agree with the first posting about buying used toys and mobiles. I would also suggest exchanging the swing and bouncer for things you really need such as diapers, bottles (if needed), clothes, etc. and get those used too. Just lysol them down real good. My son loved his mobile starting at 7wks to about 4 1/2 months. So a total of 2 1/2 months I'm guessing. Not worth the $45 spent on it…I wish I would have bought a used one! As far as toys go you really don't need a whole lot for them until they start to get a little older. I didn't have but 2 or 3 toys for my son until he was 4 months old and needed more to keep him occupied. He has a teething ring by NUBY that has bright colored shapes and bugs on it. He loves it so much I had to get one for daycare too.

The bouncer and swing will be enough for a few months. My son just noticed his mobile around 3 months. A few weeks before probably but he still only wants to look at it for 10-15 mins. At 3 months 2 weeks he's just starting to want to touch and look at things. And we have to be careful what he grabs because everything goes in his mouth that he can hold on to! So, no, right now you don't need any toys.
