The very best thing to do is to only give handmade toys- items you or someone you know has made from fabric or knitted/crocheted- no buttons or eyes!!!
The next best is to only buy things made in the US. A good store to try is: www.lehmans.com

Your best bet is to try and avoid toys made in China for now. Check each toy boxes and it will say where the toy was made/manufactured.

I would suggest that you get a lead test kit. Infants really are the ones most at risk because they put everything in their mouths. OR you could do what my cousin's GF did. Her daughter had mostly Tupperware to play with (not the toys, the containers) as well as homemade dolls.

We have stopped buying our daughter plastic toys from the stores. We have way too much plastic, light up, musical crap around here anyway. If people insist on getting her toys for Christmas, I'm going to ask that they get books or hand-made wooden toys. Most of her Christmas gifts are toys my dad made for us when we were little (post-1978, so no lead paint there). I'm also going to make her some soft blocks out of felt, instead of the plastic foam ones she has now.
Young kids really don't need too many toys. I know we – and probably most of America – have way more toys than our kids need. My little one would be perfectly happy with about 4 of her toys, but we still have a basket full in the living room and a hammock of them in her room. Now that I'm thinking about it, maybe we'll purge some of the excess – sell it on ebay for Christmas money!

Haba, Manhattan and Lamaze toys are all NOT made in China. We are asking for baby toys from these companies this Christmas from our family. Plus they are all great quality developmental toys
