Where do you store childrens toys?

Posted at January 26th, 2009 by admin

I live in a small bungalow and have a 2 year old daughter she has so many toys. Does anyone have any good ideas for storage.

I have had that problem my whole life. I have always lived in small places and kids get SO many toys. Here are my tips
-I got her a bed that is off the floor at least 1 foot and a half. Than I bought 3 rectangle baskets that are extra 'drawers' for toys.
-I got her a bookshelf for books AND toys.
-I gave her a very small portion of my storage room.
-I got her on of those sheets with pockets on it for the back of her door
-and the best one is that I only give her half of her toys.. and save the other half on the top of the closet shelf in my room. Kids get so bored with their toys and they dont' play with them all. I give them half and rotate them every 4-7 months. They always have new toys taht way

We have a small apartment. I use my daughters bassinet as toy storage since she has out grown it, and I don't have room to store it. The top holds all her stuffed animals, and the bottom holds her toys.

We use the plastic bins you can buy from walmart. They are cheap and they stack!

We bought the cheap plastic 3 drawer dressers to keep all of my boyfriends daughters toys in. For the bigger toys try putting shelves up on one wall in the room. She might have to ask you to get them down for her but it will make the room look bigger.

I bought a sturdy 3 shelf book case from Lowes and canvas bins to put it. I have three bins in the bottom shelf, two in the middle and a place for her puzzles, books on the top shelf and bulky toys like her playdough barrel, coloring books and crayons on top. It works well since it's a piece of furniture and not a primary color eyesore. Plus when she gets older she has a nice book case. It also keeps her toys separated so that she can easily find what she is looking for.

I have 2 kids, a 4 year old boy, and a 1 year old girl. Rubber made plastic containers are the best. You should go through and pick out special or favorite ones, and pack away the rest. If you keep everything, guaranteed you will be renting a storage unit! We took the stuff we weren't going to keep to a resale shop and got a bit of cash for it, and the rest of it we took to a women's and children's shelter.

We have a 2 year old also and use a bookcase and baskets and next to it we also have a really nice wooden toy chest.

The bookcase is only 3 shelves so she can reach things easily and the baskets help keep things hidden and organized when not in use, yet easily accsible. I have also seen really cool ones at target with little chalk boards so you can label the baskets.

All the large toys easily fit in the toy chest or off to the side.

I found it also helped to keep things in one area, after we set aside a little nook that was just for her. We put down a Tigger Rug and moved the bookcase and toy chest over there. She loves having a little space that is just hers. I am guessing with a small place this may not always be possible.

Stackable plastic boxes, and coat hangers are good if you can get hold of some pretty colorful sacks and they hang on their, also good for those dressing up clothes

For my kids toys my husband built a unit that holds dishpans and we separated their toys into barbies, cars, dress up etc. You can buy the exact same unit a Lowes. We put that unit into their closet because they have a large closet and don't use a lot of it for clothes or shoes. The bigger toys we put on shelves or in a toy box.

First things first, she is big enough to help get rid of some of the older toys that she doesnt play with as much. Instead of worrying how to store them all, have her help you go through them and donate some to charity. Tell her how she is helping another little girl have toys. If she doesnt go for that idea, do it while she naps. It know it sounds mean but one child doesnt really need a ton of toys, they have their favorites and the ones that sit collecting dust can be given to those who would cherish them more, (mainly because a two year old quickly grows tired of a toy and moves on to another).

After you have gotten it down to a smaller and more manageable pile, get you a set of little stackable boxes that will fit beside or under her bed. Or get a hanging net that has seperate compartments for her toys, but is easy for her to get them in and out of, preferably with the openings in the front of the compartments so she doesnt get tangled in the net itself. You can hang a net from one corner to the other of a small space for her dollies and such that are just to precious and full of memories to toss, but she doesnt pay much attention to anymore.
Small toyboxs will get in the way in such a small space, but you can try finding a coffee table that has a lift open top. Let her keep her toys in there when she isnt playing with them, then they are out of sight, but she knows where to get them when she wants them. My friend has one, its heavy duty plastic and looks like dark wood, both sides of the top open seperatly and she uses it for toys. In her small space its perfect for her two kids to hide their toys but have easy access when they want to play. When she has company, it just looks like a nice coffee table and is good for drinks and plates when lack of table space happens.
    Hope this helps!

Get one of thoes chests that can double as a coffee table or even a bench. Also, its a good idea to rotate the toys. Put out only a few and the rest put in storage. When the child gets bored of them, put them away and take out a few more. It works pretty well.

When you live in a small apartment, EVERYTHING needs to be multi-functional. You can store toys inside of ottomans, benches, etc. The most important thing about toys is that when kids have a lot… there are many things they are likely not playing with and should be gone through to eliminate anything that is just taking up space. Also, under the bed storage and closetmaid products are a life saver.

My son is 14 months old his bedroom is upstairs so because he cant be up there playing we have all his toys in our family room. We bought a big wicker basket (they dont all fit) and put the toys in a corner near the couch. When you walk into the room you cant see the toys when they are put away.

Just for now, I have a rack with a bunch of bins on it for small toys, and I have a small plastic box with a loose lid so she can get it off herself. I am going through a similar thing, I have a 3 yr. old with a small bedroom, no separate playroom, so the living room is overrun with her toys! I was thinking about getting a toy chest maybe for bigger items, it has a shelf also for books, etc. But I don't know if I want such a large item taking up space.

The first link is similar to what I have now. I got mine at Kmart, and it's a white frame with pastel bins (green, yellow, purple, pink). The second link is what I was thinking about getting.

I agree with all the answers, and I have also used our playpen to hold toys. They are small and can hold a lot. It currently holds my girls dress up clothes.

I bought a large wall shelf at Ikea. 5 squares by 5 squares – it holds everything from big toys to games, books, you name it. I got bins that fit in the shelves for small items and stuffed animals. It was a lifesaver. I'd recommend looking for something like this in your area. This is what it looks like:
