What is your fav childhood story and why?

Posted at June 27th, 2010 by admin

I am looking for a story that my son will enjoy. Is there any stories for your own childhood that you remember fondly and why?

There are really only two books I can remember: Lon Po Po and The Stinky Cheese Man.

Lon Po Po is a bit of a dark fairytale. It’s labeled as a Chinese version of Little Red Riding Hood.

"This version of the Red Riding Hood story from Young ( The Emperor and the Kite ; Cats Are Cats ; Yeh-Shen ) features three daughters left at home when their mother goes to visit their grandmother. Lon Po Po, the Granny Wolf, pretends to be the girls’ grandmother, until clever Shang, the eldest daughter, suspects the greedy wolf’s real identity. Tempting him with ginkgo nuts, the girls pull him in a basket to the top of the tree in which they are hiding, then let go of the rope–killing him."

I just remember loving the heck out of that book when I was younger. I can’t tell you why it appealed to me so much, though.

Also, I thought The Stinky Cheese Man was the best book ever written. It’s a bunch of fairytales retold to be absolutely ridiculous and stupid. But they’re a lot of fun. :D

"The Secret Garden" comes to mind. Before that, "Bambi".

Frog and Toad are Friends. I loved this book when I was a child because my mom read it to me and then when I got a little older I could read it to myself. They have a lot of little morals and things like that.

There are actually like 4 or 5 different books about frog and toad.
I know I’m a girl but I know my brother also enjoyed these books.

    The Story of Ferdinand -
The book tells the story of a bull (named Ferdinand) who would rather smell flowers than fight in bullfights. He sits in the middle of the bull ring failing to take heed of any of the provocations of the matador and others to fight. Ferdinand is cool, he’d rather be cool than fight; it’s a good book.
