    I think the most …
I think the most important thing we can do is influence a change, If we can influence enough individuals, eventually, the environment will change. Instilling confidence, self-esteen and a positive outcome for good choices will show the individual what thier potential is. Changing the environment comes from the inside or the individual. This is coming from experience, not opinion. I’ve seen it work-the community responds to the individuals who inhabit it, not the other way around.

    Honestly, american …
Honestly, american exceptionalists are so stupid. They praise the one kid that worked his off to make it out of the ghetto and then insult and deride everyone else as “lazy” because they didn’t make it out of the ghetto.

the solution is not forcing kids to work harder to get out of the ghetto. the solution is making the ghetto not such a hostile environment to live. If you have to dodge bullets and risk getting beat up for carrying books around. eventually you’re gonna say, screw books!!

    So well said. I’ll …
So well said. I’ll remember the line about the rats. It’s funny, but also, what a good point about exceptionalism. I am so tired of hearing the people who say, ‘well, I made it, so what’s wrong with them’ or ‘so why do we need this or that program.’

    Repost this video …
Repost this video with the title: “If you care anything about rats” … and the viewership might soar! I live in NYC: the children have it tough. And not everyone is going to want to do well in school at the same time. We adults might be better custodians, as individuals and as a group if we asked more questions. Why are there alcohol/liquor ads plastered all over the subways? Why are children walking alone on known dangerous city blocks? Why is “regular” public school so easy?
