Consuming Kids part 3 of 7

Posted at June 22nd, 2010 by admin

Consuming Kids throws desperately needed light on the practices of a relentless multi-billion dollar marketing machine that now sells kids and their parents everything from junk food and violent video games to bogus educational products and the family car. Drawing on the insights of health care professionals, children’s advocates, and industry insiders, the film focuses on the explosive growth of child marketing in the wake of deregulation, showing how youth marketers have used the latest advances in psychology, anthropology, and neuroscience to transform American children into one of the most powerful and profitable consumer demographics in the world. Consuming Kids pushes back against the wholesale commercialization of childhood, raising urgent questions about the ethics of children’s marketing and its impact on the health and well-being of kids.

This is so incredibly unethical. I wonder — will the children being aversely affected by some of these products (e.g. obesity) be able to sue these companies? My guess is probably not very easily…

    This documentary is …
This documentary is way over the top and has many distorted views.
If your young kid fills out forms on the Internet and thinks TV reflects reality, you failed him/her as parent.
If you don’t want the stuff company’s offer..don’t buy it and teach your kids why you don’t.
If your kid says “Scooby Macaroni+cheese” are the best serve him/her 3 different kind without telling which is which and let him/her decide.
On the other hand, that would take time, better buy Scooby ones and turn the TV louder.

Is this the reason children pay more attention to toys on Christmas? I wont lie, I was a pretty spoiled kid around Christmas. I really couldn’t care less about why it was celebrated. I just wanted that new barbie corvette. Wow, I feel like I’ve been had.

Well, that was pretty damned disturbing.

Vance Packard in his 1957 book “The Hidden Persuaders” described the beginnings of all this. How the advertising industry in the 1940s began bringing in psychiatrists and behavioral experts to figure out how best to manipulate peoples’ minds.
