My father was ( …
My father was (deceased) always a non-believer, although he went to church with my mother. My mother is almost a non-believer although she went to church because of my grandma. My grandma believes, although she’s very liberal (almost a non-believer)

My mom believes there is a “god”-force beyond, even though it’s neither christian nor identified by any other religion practiced by men. It has rather a Deistic flavour to it. . .

Sorry I did not see your post further down, you seem to be repeating my point that it relates to some Germanic/Scandinavian myths religion etc. My Scandinavian parents always told me that the Old Man Winter, or Old Man Forrest was the original Father Christmas who pre-dated Christianity. Of course they could have been mistaken too, but when you add the elves in it does sound plausible.

Elves are very much a Scandinavian invention, which definitely pre-dates Christianity.

That Father Christmas, or Old Man Winter should have little Elf helpers does connect!

OK where I come from we don’t call him Santa, we call him Father Christmas, and he definitely pre-dates Christianity. He was known as Sir Christmas, Old Father Christmas and Old Man Winter… A kidn of green man figure.

With respect to Santa of course you are quite correct that he post dates Christianity, but I submit that Santa is just another name for Father Christmas… or pre-christian Old Man Winter…

This is a Scandinavian / Norse myth legend etc.

Of course I could be talking crap!

Nope. Saint Nicholas is about 1500 years old. Santa Claus got his current outfit in 1931.

Santa Claus is an Americanized combination of the Dutch Sinterklaas (Sint Nicolaas) and the British Father Christmas figure, with some germanic and Scandinavian elements to replace some of the Saint’s Catholic feautures. This new figure was popularized by a cartoonist and later restyled for a Coca-Cola compaign. There are also similarties between Sinterklaas and the germanic god Odin, but the historic St. Nicholas was a very Christian miracle worker (also very popular in the Orthodox Church).
