although she went to church because of my grandma. My grandma believes, although she’s very liberal (almost a non-believer)
My father was (deceased) always a non-believer, although he went to church with my mother. My mother is almost a non-believer
My mom believes there is a “god”-force beyond, even though it’s neither christian nor identified by any other religion practiced by men. It has rather a Deistic flavour to it. . .
Sorry I did not see …
Sorry I did not see your post further down, you seem to be repeating my point that it relates to some Germanic/Scandinavian myths religion etc. My Scandinavian parents always told me that the Old Man Winter, or Old Man Forrest was the original Father Christmas who pre-dated Christianity. Of course they could have been mistaken too, but when you add the elves in it does sound plausible.
To add weight to …
To add weight to this, where did the elves come from?
Elves are very much a Scandinavian invention, which definitely pre-dates Christianity.
That Father Christmas, or Old Man Winter should have little Elf helpers does connect!
OK where I come …
OK where I come from we don’t call him Santa, we call him Father Christmas, and he definitely pre-dates Christianity. He was known as Sir Christmas, Old Father Christmas and Old Man Winter… A kidn of green man figure.
With respect to Santa of course you are quite correct that he post dates Christianity, but I submit that Santa is just another name for Father Christmas… or pre-christian Old Man Winter…
This is a Scandinavian / Norse myth legend etc.
Of course I could be talking crap!
> Santa came way …
> Santa came way before St.Nicholas!
Nope. Saint Nicholas is about 1500 years old. Santa Claus got his current outfit in 1931.
Santa Claus is an …
Santa Claus is an Americanized combination of the Dutch Sinterklaas (Sint Nicolaas) and the British Father Christmas figure, with some germanic and Scandinavian elements to replace some of the Saint’s Catholic feautures. This new figure was popularized by a cartoonist and later restyled for a Coca-Cola compaign. There are also similarties between Sinterklaas and the germanic god Odin, but the historic St. Nicholas was a very Christian miracle worker (also very popular in the Orthodox Church).

Crossbowman,,,, big annoying buzzer sound WRONG.
It;s the other way around.
Santa came way before St.Nicholas!
Santa predates Christianity.
Don’t beleive me, go check it for yourself… nothing Christian about Santa… no.

Santa is based on a christian saint. Saint Nicholas. In fact santa’s probably the most christian thing in christmas.

Is there anything that’s not indoctrination? Look around, the world is indoctrination.
Tracie has that …
Tracie has that unique beauty that is so much better than standard barbie doll idea of beauty and she is so smart. And Matt is the sharpest Atheist i have ever seen. Love you two! Keep doing what you do i am hooked on the show!
017524062, OK sorry …
017524062, OK sorry if I was stating the obvious… In that case I totally agree with you. Christmas is great, I love it, all the excess and the jolliness and the giving…. very un-Christian and very Pagan in my view. I love Christmas, it really sticks it in the face of Christians because it’s so obviously not a Christian holiday…. Where does it mention Santa in the bible?
Yes, I know. My …
Yes, I know. My point was that Christmas, as most of us celebrate it, has nothing to do with Christ – and that’s the way I like it! As I implied previously, the good stuff about Christmas pre-dates Christianity ie. feasting, drinking and having a good time. It’s common knowledge that the old traditions simply continued under a different name.
017524062, …
017524062, Christmas did not come from Christianity (well mostly). As you state there were other beliefs before Christianity and one main part was the celebration of the days lengthening after the winter solstice. Christianity, having trouble converting Pagans, simply adopted their feasts and gave them another name! Christ, if he existed at all, WAS NOT BORN ON 25 DEC!
yeah i wasnt saying …
yeah i wasnt saying hyper inflation and credit was the issue. the stores dont care if you saved the money as long as you hand it over to them.
its like the episode of the simpsons were a bunch of executives are conspiring to increase sales between xmas and some other holiday.
“we need another holiday like love day only less lame”….
“happy love day everyone”
Lisa criticises it and is told she doesnt have the love day spirit or some shit
@robertwc82: Sure, …
@robertwc82: Sure, I’ve been to those libertarian videos that forecast hyperinflation and such. In fact, I think that it’s going to happen, myself.
However, I don’t buy gifts with money I don’t have. I buy gifts with money I’ve saved up. If I’ve made $30,000 the whole year and spend $300 in total for everyone for Christmas (1%), that’s appropriate for me. Let’s just say that is the money saved from giving to the church on Sunday.
To those who don’t have money, don’t spend it so easily.
really? i like …
really? i like sound, it allows me to hear things.
what about sight? got anything against seeing?
lol =)
its fun for kids to …
its fun for kids to receive, im not saying it used to be more fun. what im saying is modern day society has been brainwashed (christian or not). “if people dont constantly buy things they dont need with money they dont have the whole system will collapse”
did you ever thing maybe christmas could be just as fun without so much excess spending. im not saying Xmas is bad but our sociaties go way overboard, because the tv tells them to.
@robertwc82: ” …
@robertwc82: “christmas didnt become all about commercialism untill America re-invented it.”
Well, I guess this is one time I can say, “God Bless America!”
I’m an American, and though my family and I are not Christians, we celebrated Christmas (see 017524062′s “Saturnalia” comment). We did NOT go to church, but we had great fun opening presents and seeing each other open the presents we gave them. Yes, it was fun to give and receive. Don’t pretend like Christmas was more fun before.
Sound is bad
Sound is bad
i heard that back …
i heard that back in england in the last couple of centuries christmas was just another holiday were people went out and got drunk, but was just a 1 day affair. i guess just like most puplic holidays are today, like july 4th in the US.
just an excuse to let loose
but then other countries other than england celebrate in their own ways, wasnt it the germans who had the santa fairy tale?
Christmas is the …
Christmas is the one of the few good thing to come out of Christianity – I know it’s basically the same as Saturnalia, and the ancient Britons and others also had mid-winter feasts and celebrations for the obvious reason that it’s a miserable time of the year and we all need an excuse for a party and an excess of food and drink. Clearly, the way we celebrate Christmas has nothing to do with christ – otherwise I wouldn’t enjoy it so much. Don’t be such Puritans about it – enjoy the excess!
