Virginia Governor Tim Kaine discusses why the United States must improve education at a faster rate especially by preparing more high school students to graduate ready to succeed in college and career training. The discussion is based on the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) report A Critical Mission: Making Adolescent Reading an Immediate Priority in SREB States. Governor Kaine chaired the committee of prominent state leaders that directed the report and its recommendations. He served as the SREB Chair in 2008-2009. This is a portion of his remarks on May 1, 2009, at the Education Writers Association annual meeting at The Madison Hotel in Washington, D.C., at a breakfast sponsored by SREB.
