In the past few decades, clothing has been a way of expressing one’s own inner most emotions. It has been a window to a person’s soul; what they wear reflects on their personality. However, expression through clothes has led many to be teased and harassed by peers. Society has begun to judge people on what they wear; not who they are.
Implementing School Uniforms into the Curriculum will not only cease the bullying and harassing that currently takes place, but will also create equality within students. Therefore the only aspect distinguishing one from another would be their unique personality. Since everyone looks similar, the great task of fitting-in will no longer be as large a problem.
Yet, school uniforms do more than just help people fit in. They help students concentrate on what they come to do at school; to study. The use of school uniforms help keep students focused. "Uniforms do eliminate competition, pressure, and assaults perpetrated by older kids on younger kids for their sneakers and other possessions. They also allow kids to focus better, especially in the lower grades," explains Dr. Alan Hitler, senior psychologist in the Children’s and Adolescent Unit at Maimonides Medical Centre. Clothes can no longer be a distraction and as a result, more time will be spent studying and less will be spent of discussion about the "latest trends". It has also been reported that students dressed in "work clothes" rather than "play clothes", take a more serious approach to their learning.
A study conducted by the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP) over a period of four years, shows that school suspensions dropped by 90%. This demonstrates that school uniforms do impact your behaviour, and do help maintain discipline.
Some may argue that school uniforms do help during school, but are useless outside school. Yet the same study also reveals that the general overall crime rate dropped by 91% over a time frame of four years. What better use of school uniforms can there be? So whether you wear them or not, school uniforms do effect you outside school grounds.
School uniforms has many benefits that surround us daily. Whether it be the equality it creates among peers, or the fact that it disciplines students and motivates them to learn, one thing is certain. School uniforms should be part of the school experience.
